Start with the essential tags
For most songs, the essential tags are title, artist, album, album artist, genre, year, track number, and disc number. These fields control how the file appears in common music apps. Correcting these first gives the biggest improvement with the least effort.
Use album artist carefully
The album artist field is especially important. If every track on an album has a different featured artist, the album can split into many separate albums. Setting a consistent album artist keeps the release grouped together. For compilation albums, use a value such as Various Artists.
Check track numbers and disc numbers
Track numbers should be consistent across the whole album. If a release has multiple discs, disc number and disc total help preserve the correct playback order. This is useful for live albums, deluxe editions, classical collections, and box sets.
Save and test the file
After editing, save the metadata and download the updated music file. Open it in your preferred player to confirm that the title, artist, album, cover image, and order display correctly. Testing one track before editing a full library can prevent repeated mistakes.
